May 8 Meeting

On May 8 the Art Association held its last meeting until September. Pictured above is Susan Kelley who gave a wonderful demonstration of her painting techniques for an interested audience of more than 35. The above photo was taken during the break, when audience members could take a closer look at Susan's palette.
Other news during the meeting was that (1) the current officers have agreed to serve another term (thank God); (2) the Art Gallery at Patriot Place will host another "Paint Out" Saturday afternoon June 15 in which all artists and students are invited to participate; (3) Foxboro High School's Kira Hallberg was awarded the annual David Whithers Memorial Scholarship; and (4) four other art associations besides Foxboro have been invited to participate in a unique exhibit entitled "Masterpiece Masquerade" in which artists can submit a copy of a famous masterpiece -- but with a "twist" which will make it unique. This special exhibit will be held the first two weekends of October at the Gallery at Patriot Place, with a judge from each association. Prize money will be awarded.
Finally, the Art Association wants to thank St. Mark's Episcopal Church for letting us use their wonderful downstairs room for our meetings the past two years while the Boyden Library was undergoing its expansion project. We look forward to returning to our "new/old" Boyden Library this September.

Art Show in Norfolk May 4 & 5

The Franklin Art Association is holding its Spring Art Show at the Stony Brook Sanctuary in Norfolk this weekend May 4 and 5. On Saturday it will be from 10 to 5 and on Sunday from 12 to 4. Light refreshments will be available and artists will be painting en plein air on the grounds. A beautiful setting for the whole family,Stony Brook is located at 108 North Street, Norfolk.

Pictured above is Sergio Roffo painting at the Boston Public Garden on Sunday April 28. Mr. Roffo is a well-known artist member of the Copley Society who joined more than seventy other artist members for the 75th annual Copley Society Paint Out. It was a gorgeous day to watch these pros paint glorious Boston scenes en plein air. A gala is planned for the following Saturday when these still-wet paintings will be auctioned off. Masterpiece Masquerade

The Artist's Studio & Gallery at Patriot Place wants to host a special exhibit in the Fall for 5 local art associations: Foxboro, Franklin, Canton, Taunton, and Norwood. The exhibit would be called "Masterpiece Masquerade" and the idea would be to copy a famous painting or photograph, but to add a twist, making it unique (or funny). The Foxboro Art Assn did this three years ago at the local library and one artist painted a pastel copy of Renoir's "Dance at Bougival" and put the Beatles in the crowd. Another artist painted a Van Gogh "self-portrait" and painted in a lapel pin which said "I Buy Art". Since it was so much fun, the Foxboro members want to do it again, but this time the Gallery at Patriot Place wants to open it up to other local art associations and exhibit it to a larger crowd at Patriot Place this Fall. It would be open to all media, including photography. We plan to hold it the first 2 weekends in October and think it should be judged by a jury comprising a member of each art association (who was not participating in the exhibit). The prize money would be $200 for 1st, $150 for 2nd and $100 for 3rd. Each member would submit only one piece for an entry fee of $10. Having attended last year's workshop, I was excited that Deb was invited back to lead a class focusing specifically on techniques for painting water.

Deb had many wonderful tidbits about painting water. She shared this quote by Don Demers, " Study the water until you understand what it looks like, then paint how it feels." I personally love stuff like this!

Deb shared her 80/20 Guide with us, asking us to consider this ratio when making decisions regarding composition, shape, value, color, line, texture, and rhythm.

We have so much to think of when making good paintings. Often this is done intuitively, but Deb's insight encourages artists to slow down and consider the options for deliberate choices -- a smart thing to do.

One tidbit Deb shared has sat in my head as a good default for making these decisions:
What will make someone walk across a room to see the painting? Of course you should choose the options that would do that!

As important as composition is, Deb mentioned that composition doesn't get credit for its role in good paintings. No one really says, "Wow! What composition in that painting!"

People's Choice

Pictured above is artist Vania Noverca with her powerful oil painting "Heart of a Lion" which won the "People's Choice" ribbon as voted by the public during the annual Spring Members' Show of the Foxboro Art Association.
The show was displayed at the Artist's Studio & Gallery at Patriot Place for 2 weekends in March. There were 122 entries and more than 200 votes cast. Congratulations to everyone who participated. It was a great show!  

Robert Douglas Hunter On Line

A one-hour televised visit with famed art artist Robert Douglas Hunter at his studio in Walpole, which was filmed by fellow-artist Bill St. George for Walpole Cable TV, is now on line and can be viewed by anyone with a computer. Simply go on line to http://www.walpolecommunitytelevision.com/, then click on the left-hand box, "Video on Demand", then click on the right-hand box labeled "Impressions" and then click on the 3d listing down, labeled "Impressions 365". You can also click on the double arrows at the bottom to make the  picture full screen. It is an interesting show, with lots of insights about Robert Douglas Hunter's long career as a resourceful artist.

Art Bus Trip to NYC April 13

Medway300 Arts Weekend

As part of the town of Medway celebrating 300 years, it has issued an open call to all Massachusetts artists for a juried art exhibition on the weekend of May 11 and 12 at Medway High School. The exhibition is open to photography, painting, drawing. digital media, mixed media and printmaking. It is titled "300" (open to interpretation). Entries can be no bigger than 36" x 36" There are 3 cash prizes and no entry fee. Each artist can submit one entry by e-mailing a quality photo (5Megabytes or more) no later than April 1 to Medway300visual@gmail.com (subject line: Medway 300 Art Exhibition). Artists will be notified by e-mail April 15. The drop-off and pick up dates are still to be announced.

Robin Carroll Exhibitions

Member Robin Carroll is exhibiting her watercolors, caligraphy and pastels in the Canton Library for the month of March. She is also participating in a Masscribes Exhibit: "New England Poets: A Calligraphic Interpretation" at the Norfolk Library, April 1-May 3. Opening reception, Friday, April 5, 5-8 pm. Calligraphy/watercolor poems will be on display, such as the one pictured above by Robin, titled "Midnight Sky".

Zorn Exhibit at Gardner Museum

The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum will exhibit 24 of Anders Zorn paintings Feb. 28-May 13 in its new wing. The museum is located down the street from the MFA at 280 the Fenway, Boston. This first historic exhibition will present new international scholarship about Anders Zorn, considered one of the most significant artists of the Belle Epoque (“Beautiful Era” 1871-1914). Although highly esteemed by contemporaries on both sides of the Atlantic, Zorn is little known in the U.S. today, although he is often favorably compared with his contemporary, John Singer Sargent. Isabella Stewart Gardner was one of his major patrons in the U.S. Admission is $15 for adults and $12 for seniors. The museum is closed Tuesdays. It is open the other 6 days 11 am-5pm, except Thursdays, when it is open until 9pm.

Spring Show March 15-24

The annual Spring Members' Show will be held at the Artists Studio & Gallery at Patriot Place for 2 weekends in March, 15-17 and 22-24. Members can submit up to 2 pieces each. The deadline for members to submit titles and other information is March 9. Delivery of the pieces at the gallery is late Thursday, March 14, 4-7 pm. David Sturtevant Demonstrates

The Art Association met a week later than usual because of a conflict with St. Mark's service for Ash Wednesday. Nevertheless, our scheduled demonstrator, David Sturtevant, was able to accomodate our new meeting date of Feb. 20. His demonstration was most informative, showing how the "Old Masters" painted. So he started by painting a value study with 3 neutral tones: a light, medium and dark brown (sienna). His reference was urban rooftops, and the value study allowed him to simplify the scene with large, basic shapes. Once these were laid in, he added color and details, as shown above. David usually paints in oils, but for purposes of this live demonstration he used acrylic. He donated his finished painting as the raffle prize, which was won by Diane Scotti. Mr. Sturtevant proved to be a thoughtful, entertaining demonstrator who rewarded the surprisingly large audience who had weathered a cold and blustery night to watch him work. Ash Wednesday Meeting Postponed One Week to Feb. 20

Due to a scheduling conflict for Ash Wednesday at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, the Foxboro Art Association has been asked by the church to move our February meeting from this Wednesday, February 13th to Wednesday, February 20th. Accordingly we have changed our meeting to Feb. 20 and our scheduled demonstrator, David Sturdevant, has graciously agreed to be there as well.  We apologize for the short notice.
