McGurl To Lecture Saturday Feb. 25

Renowned artist Joseph McGurl will give a talk "Issues in Contemporary Realism," (with slide presentation) at 4 o'clock on Saturday Feb. 25 at the Guild of Bosotn Artists, 162 Newbury St., Boston. It is free and open to the public. A collection of his paintings will also be available.

Irish Paintout March 17 at Patriot Place

On Saturday March 17 Patriot Place will let artists use the empty store (which used to be the Apple Tech Store before it moved across the way) kitty corner across from Davio's and Verizon during its Irish Festival. This means we can have our "paintout" regardless of the weather. On a nice day we can also be outside, anywhere between the empty store and the gallery, provided we don't block any store entrances. Patriot Place would like us to also display any Irish art. Patriot Place invites all artists to join them for what is always a fun day. And don't forget to drop by the Gallery at Patriot Place and view the Foxboro Art Association Spring Members' Show.

"Reflections" in Sharon

Karen Gordon, Vera Cross and Sheila Pallay will exhibit watercolors, pastels and photography for a show titled "Reflections". The exhibit will be at the Lakeside Gallery in the Sharon Community Center, overlooking beautiful Lake Massapaog, 219 Massapaog Ave., Sharon, from Feb. 14 to March 30. A reception will be held Wednesday evening, Feb. 22, 7-9 pm.

Demonstrator Robert Bolster

At our February meeting oil painter Robert Bolster provided a multi-media presentation of his journey as an artist -- from his grade school drawings to his career as an illustrator and finally to his emergence as a fine art painter. It was a large Valentine's Day crowd of more than 40 attendees. Mr. Bolster showed photos of his work using Apple Pages software and then switched to a live demonstration of how he paints. He begins with a photograph as a reference, in this case a 20x24 photo of two pears. He always uses his own photographs, refines them with Photoshop and then prints them full-size using an Epson 2200 printer. He then places the finished photo on a shelf he has attached to his easel and paints on a canvas the same size as his photo. (See the top photo.) He tends to paint thinly on canvas he stretches himself and he uses Liquin to help extend the color and accelerate the drying process. Over recent years he developed a technique of dividing a large canvas into a series of squares -- sometimes up to 144 -- and attempts to paint six different squares per day when working in this manner. He feels this helps him be more productive as a professional artist. During his 90 minute demonstration he worked quickly painting a beautiful still-life which he donated for our raffle. Margaret Lachut was our happy winner, as were the folks who attended this wonderful presentation.

Irish Festival at Patriot Place March 17

St. Patrick's Day is Saturday, March 17, and once again Patriot Place has invited all of us to join in on their Irish Festival celebration. Space is limited within the art gallery with our March Members Show, but hopefully the luck of the Irish will bring us good weather. If so you can bring a table and your Irish artwork to Patriot Place. Or if you just want to come and paint outside the art gallery at Patriot Place that day, weather permitting, you are more than welcome to do so.

2d Lussier Workshop

Ten artists enjoyed the second workshop this year offered by David & Pam Lusier through the Foxboro Art Association. The workshop was held Sunday, Feb. 12, at the East Walpole Community Center,a bright and roomy space everyboddy seemed to like. The theme of the workshop was marine painting. David began with a demonstration (pictured above) before sending everybody off to paint their own masterpieces, while he and Pam circulated among the group, offering constructive suggestions. Everybody felt they learned something -- a worthwile experience for everyone!

Mansfield Show March 24-April 22

The Mansfield Music & Arts Association invites all 2-dimensional artists (except photographers) to join them in a “Breakout” exhibit March 24-Aprill 22. Artists must submit 2 pieces, one in your traditional style and one in a new, breakout style. Both pieces will hang together and will be juried. Cash awards ($75, 50,25) for the top 3 juried. The show will be at the Black Box Theater & Morini Gallery, near the center of Mansfield (377 North Main St.). A reception is scheduled for Saturday, March 24, 5-7 pm. Tony's Mirror Stand

We are grateful to the Boyden Library for loaning us their ceiling mirror to use at our meetings for our watercolor demonstrators. To buy one of our own would cost upwards of $1,000. The only problem is that we can't install it in the ceiling at St. Mark's for structural reasons. Fortunately Tony Donovan has designed an elegant (and inexpensive) solution. Pictured above is the completed, 4-stanchion frame. The lower photo shows Tony working on one of the prototypes. The frame was especially designed with PVC pipes so it could be dismantled and stored with the mirror in Community Room closet safely. Thanks to Tony and the Boyden Library, the audience will now be able to watch future watercolor demonstrators without having to crowd around the table.

Bermuda Workshop May 4-6, 2012

Copley artist Eli Cedrone will conduct a 3-day workshop in Bermuda May 4-6. Bermuda was once her home and remains one of her favorite places to visit. Join her for a unique experience; from the breathtaking beaches of the South Shore to the winding alleyways of historic St. George’s, while learning the fundamentals of landscape and figure painting. $250 Rent Reimbursemet Grant

The Foxboro Cultural Council has granted the Art Association's application to reimburse its monthly rental expense during 2012. Because the Boyden Library is undergoing reconstuction, the Foxboro Art Association had to move its meeting place down the street to St. Mark's Episcopal Church. But, as a consequence, it incurs a $25 rental fee each month that it meets. These meetings are free and open to the public -- not just the members. And since the Art Association already pays professionals to perform at these meetings and to inform the audience about different aspects of their art, the Association felt these meetings enriched the whole community. Accordingly, it was felt that this new expense warranted community support. The Foxboro Cultural Council has agreed and has gramted reimbursement for ten meetings to be held this year. The Foxboro Cultural Council is a local agency supported by the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency, aimed at helping support local arts projects. We are very grateful.

Pastel Workshop at Patriot Place March 17

The Artist's Studio & Gallery at Patriot Place will host a one-day pastel workshop for $65 on Saturday, March 17. The instructor is noted pastel artist Deborah Quinn-Munson. Cindy Baron Workshop in Walpole Apr. 21 & 22

The Foxboro Art Association is delighted to offer a two-day watercolor workshop with prize-winning artist Cindy Baron. The workshop will be held Saturday & Sunday, April 21 and 22, in the newly renovated East Walpole Community Room at the bargain price of $120. The Norfolk Cultural Council is inviting all artists to its Open Juried Art Competition March 3 – March 31, 2012 at the Norfolk Library.
Reception: March 10, 5pm–7pm Awards, art, music & refreshments
Awards: Cash awards presented for the top 10 pieces of art
Entry Fee: $15 one entry, 2 for $20, maximum of 2 entries. Entry Fee is non-refundable. Please make check payable to Norfolk Cultural Council.
Application: Applications may be sent with payment. Check or money order will be accepted through the mail from January 16 through February 3. Digital images of artwork on a CD may be mailed with payment to: Norfolk Cultural Council, One Liberty Lane, Norfolk MA 02056 or sent separately via email to: norfolk2012@gmail.com. If you would like your CD returned please provide a self addressed stamped envelope.
Media: Two-dimensional artwork (Paintings, mono-prints, drawings, photographs and collages. (Prints of original artwork will not be accepted. All work must be original). Pieces must not exceed 36”x36” (including frame). All work must be framed & ready to hang with wire. (No saw tooth hooks).

December Meeting

At our December meeting Tuesday evening, Tiago Finato (pictured above)enthralled the audience with his techniques in painting a still life. Tiago started with a gray, toned canvas, painting first a loose, abstract version of his composition, followed by painting in the darker elements and saving until the end the light-struck areas. All the while, Tiago explained the principles underlying his techniques. His demonstration was enjoyed by everyone and at the end of the meeting one of the members purchased the painting.
Frank Quinn noted that attendance at the meeting was free and open to the public and members were encouraged to bring friends or relatives with them to future meetings. The meetings are always held on the second Tuesday of the month. Therefore the next meeting will be Jan. 10.
Haydi Hurley is organizing a watercolor workshop with the wonderful Cindy Baron for the weekend of April 21. The cost is $60 per day and will be held in East Walpole. Contact Haydi at hchurley@comcast.net and let her know if you want to sign up for a 1-day or 2-day workshop.

Meeting Tuesday Dec. 13

The last meeting of 2011 is this Tuesday Dec. 13 at St Mark's, 116 South St., Foxboro (aside of Foxboro High School). Tiago Finato, the noted Fall River oil painter, will be the demonstrator. We will briefly discuss the upcoming 2012 workshops. All are welcome, even non-members. Free refreshments! Starts at 7 pm. Please come.

Second Day Altenative for Lussier Workshop

Due to the great response for the David & Pam Lussier workshop, we have added a second Sunday, February 12, to allow for smaller groups and more individual attention -- but probably at a slightly higher price than the $55 originally quoted. Please let Tony Donovan (tony@asdonovan.com) know if you can commit to either date (1/29 or 2/12) as he will try to balance the number of participants over the two workshop dates. The cost is still to be determined, depending on how many we have for each date.
And don't forget our upcoming meeting this Tuesday evening 7 pm at St. Mark's, 116 South Street, Foxboro.

David Lussier Workshop set for January 29th IS NOW FULL

David Lussier Workshop

We are pleased to announce that the David Lussier workshop is now fully booked. The workshop with the team of David Lussier and Pamela Simpson will focus on painting water scenes. In this one-day workshop, we will learn how to interpret and simplify harbor scenes (boats, water, reflections, etc.). You will learn to draw and paint boats accurately and learn to understand how water and reflections behave and need to be interpreted. References photos will be provided or you can bring your own. This will be a fun workshop.

This workshop is open to all mediums as the Lussiers are proficient in all mediums and the concepts learned will apply to all mediums.

Cost: Because of the increased number of participants, the cost has been reduced to $55.
