Unique Show at Norfolk Library

There is still time to see a unique art show at the Norfolk Library -- until Nov. 30. The show features beautiful quilts inspired by paintings submitted to quilters last January. Some of the quilters "interpreted" the paintings somewhat abstractly, while others reproduced the painting faithfully, but better. It's hard to describe. But if you get the opportunity to swing by an run in, you really should do it. Trust me.

Boyden Library Art Auction

The Boyden Library has been very generous to the Foxboro Art Association over the years. Next March is our chance to give back. There is art auction being planned to be held at the Foxboro Country Club and we are asking for your art donations to make it a success. More details to follow, but it should be a wonderful event and a great opportunity to gain exposure for all artists.

Art of the Americas

I was recently in Boston with some time to kill and found myself in the Museum of Fine Arts. I hadn't been there in a while and noticed some pieces were missing. I also noticed a curtain not successfully hiding a huge modern airy space. Now I know where the missing art is or will be, in the new wing "Art of the Americas". There will be a lot to see this November in the new large space,  designed by architects Foster + Partners, with four floors showcasing 5,000 works of art. The MFA is always a great resource on many levels. Here's the link.

The Sketchbook Project deadline approaching

The deadline to order your sketchbook and be part of this exciting Art House Coop project is coming soon, October 31.
Here are some quick facts:
•You order a sketchbook, like the one above for $25
•You select a theme (or they can randomly pick a theme for you)
•You sketch, color, collage, or whatever you want inside from now until the deadline to mail in which is January 15, 2011
•All the sketchbooks go "on tour" at several cities across the country. Closest to us is Portland Maine but they keep adding cities to the tour
•All the sketchbooks end up catalogued and ultimately will live in the Brooklyn Art Library where anyone can view them
•You can pay an extra $20 to receive a digitized version of your sketchbook.

Sounds like fun, doesn't it? You can sign up on their website by clicking this link.

A great resource for artists

I wanted to share a wonderful online resource for artists. Every Thursday, artists Leslie Saeta and Dreama Tolle Perry host an hour long blog talk radio show. You can call in to be part of the live discussion or it's also recorded so that you can listen to it whenever you have the time. In the past, they have interviewed Carol Marine, as well as gallery owners, and picture framers.

This week, their guest is Kevin Macpherson, an accomplished plein air painter. Should be interesting. Click here for the link for the information for this week's show and all of the archived shows they have recorded to date.

Unique Mixed Media Show - Quilts & Art

During November a unique display of 21 quilts paired with the works of art that inspired them will be shown at the Norfolk Libray. The quilts are (almost) finished and will be on display, along with the corresponding work of art. Meet the artists at their reception on Nov, 16, 6-8 pm.

September demonstrator :: Liz Haywood-Sullivan

The schedule of demonstrators has Liz Haywood Sullivan bringing us all back from our summer doldrums and getting our creative juices flowing at our September meeting. I wanted to chime in and say that I'm really looking forward to seeing her in her process. For years I've liked her wonderful paintings and read her articles in Pastel Journal. When I worked at Frantic Framers in Quincy, she would come in to frame her wonderful originals. It was a treat to see them and talk about her work, my work, and listen to her wonderful advice.
Here is a link to her recent article in Pastel Journal about painting snow. And an assortment of paintings I found on her website. All are courtesy and copyright of Liz Haywood-Sullivan.

Timely Information

This will be a great way to get information out to the members without having to wait for a meeting or a newsletter. Those are still valuable tools but when the information is more time dependent, it is good to have another outlet.

With that in mind, I want to let you all know about a very interesting exhibit at the Clark Museum in Williamstown. The Clark is a terrific museum located in the Berkshires of Western Mass. It is loaded with works of the Impressionists and many American and European masters. Their main exhibit this summer is Picasso Looks at Degas. It runs until September 12, 2010.

This is a very interesting exhibit. It shows a number of Degas' works of various subject matter such as cafe life, the theater, women bathing, etc. Juxtaposed with many of these works are Picasso's take on the same subject. Although Degas was much older than Picasso, they both lived in Paris at the same time at one point during their careers. Picasso would have seen many of Degas' paintings and may have been impressed or influenced by them.

The time frame of the exhibit covers many years of Picasso's life and artistic styles. It was fun to see the development of Picasso's style as he copied some of the works of Degas. Picasso did say, after all, "Good artists copy, great artists steal". You can see how he followed his own advice at this fascinating exhibit.
